Finals day for the Waikato Men’s Championship Pennants Division 2, 4 & 6 was held at Waihi on Sunday 23^rd May.

The contests were all closely fought as is befitting a final.

Division 6 between Tokoroa and Pirongia had Tokoroa ahead 2 ½ - ½ at lunchtime after the morning foursomes. However Pirongia played strongly in the singles winning five of the six matches to finally win the contest 5 ½ – 3 ½.

 

The Division 2 final was again closely fought between Waihi 1 and Hamilton 2 teams. Waihi were ahead 2-1 at lunchtime but Hamilton came back strongly in the afternoon to win the singles 4-2 and take out the contest by a margin of 5-4.

13yr old Denzel Ieremia was the stand out player for Hamilton beating his Waihi opponent Matt Griffiths 5 - 4 and playing some outstanding golf during the match.

 

Highlight of the day was Narrows vs Tokoroa contest for Div 4. Tokoroa were leading 2-1 after the morning foursomes. Narrows fought back in the afternoon and in some very close matches 3 finishing on 18 and one at 3 ½ - 2 ½. This gave an overall result of 4 ½ games each and resulted in a play off. First play off hole was halved and the second finished in the dark but miraculously 3 players birdied the 2^nd play off hole. G Forlong and G Cortesi from Tokoroa and Corey Nateush from Narrows.

This gave Tokoroa overall victory.

 

The results of these matches is that Waihi will now play a promotion relegation match with the bottom team from Div One to decide who plays in Div one next year.Tokoroa will be promoted to Div 3 and Pirongia to Div 5.

 

The course was in good order and although it was a dull, overcast and sometimes wet day nevertheless this was an exciting finish to the pennant series for these teams.
